Restrict Activity Access

Restrict Activity Access

OVERVIEW

The restrict access feature allows you to restrict the availability of an activity or even a course section according to certain conditions such as dates, grade obtained, group or activity completion.

USE CASE EXAMPLE:

The Restriction tool in Pluto is a valuable feature for managing access to courses, activities, and resources based on specific criteria. Here's a use case example of how the Restriction tool can be used in Pluto, which serves as an LMS for internal staff training:

Course Progression Restriction

Scenario: A company uses Pluto LMS for its internal staff training program, which consists of multiple courses. They want to ensure that employees can only access advanced courses after completing prerequisite courses.

Setting Up Prerequisite Courses:
  1. Action: The LMS administrator sets up a series of courses, including both basic and advanced ones.
  2. Restriction Tool: In Pluto, the administrator utilizes the Restriction tool to set prerequisites for the advanced courses.
  3. Configuration: To access an advanced course, learners must complete specific basic courses. The prerequisite course(s) are configured as requirements for the advanced course(s).

RESTRICTION TYPES

  1. User Segment: only allow access to students who belong to a specified user segment/s.
  2. Activity completion: require learners to complete (or not complete) another activity.
  3. Date: only allow access until/from a specified date and time.
  4. Grade: require learners to achieve a specified grade in another activity.
  5. Group: only allow access to students who belong to a specified group/s.
  6. User profile: control access based on profile fields in learners' profiles.
  7. Relative date: only allow access until/after a specified period of time has been reached before/after a specific course date.
  8. Level: require learners to reach a specified level.
  9. Restriction set: the above restrictions can also be nested to apply complex logic.

SET UP ACTIVITY RESTRICTION/S

Step 1: In the relevant course, click on "Edit course material."

Step 2: Next to the relevant activity, click on "Edit", followed by "Edit settings."

Note: To apply restrictions to entire course sections; next to the relevant module, click on "Edit", followed by "Edit module."

Step 3: In the "Restrict access" section, click on "Add restriction" to open the restriction picker.

Step 4: Select the restriction type you would like to apply.

Note: You can add multiple restrictions to one activity.

Step 5: Follow the prompts to select your restriction conditions, then click on "Add restriction."

Once you're happy, you can scroll down and click "Save and return to course" to see the restriction applied in your course.

Note: If you do not want learners who do not meet the conditions to see the restricted activities; you can click on the hide icon (  ) when setting your access restrictions.

This will hide upcoming activities and learners will only be able to see these when they meet the specified conditions.
